The biggest chunk of your smart-phone bill is for data charges, and choosing the right carrier and plan could reduce those costs by as much as $1,000 a year. But deciding isn't easy: AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon complicate comparisons by charging different rates for additional phone lines, breaking data allowances into chunks that don't match the competitions', and providing differing discounts for multiple phones.

To make matters even more confusing, we have new offerings, such as T-Mobile's to buy out potential customers' contracts with other carriers, and AT&T's Mobile Share Value plans. What's a consumer to do?

In our podcast, below, our experts discuss the various options available, to help you make sense of all this and make the right choice for you and your family. And for more advice, check our story, "Get the best cell phone plan for your family—and save up to $1,000 a year."
