Two charities this week rejected donations from Reddit users who gave money in the wake of leaked nude photos of celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton.
Soon after the hacked photos appeared online, a subreddit was formed dedicated to sharing the photos, as well as anything related to the leak. At the time of this article, the subreddit had more than 146,000 subscribers.
One user encouraged others to donate to the Prostate Cancer Foundation "in honor" of hacking victim Jennifer Lawrence. They raised more than $5,000 for the charity, but the organization has returned the funds. The Prostate Cancer Foundation posted the following statement on its website:
"A post appeared on Reddit late Monday afternoon, September 1, 2014. A Reddit user directed other Reddit users to make a donation to the Prostate Cancer Foundation without the Foundation’s knowledge. We would never condone raising funds for cancer research in this manner. Out of respect for everyone involved and in keeping with our own standards, we are returning all donations that resulted from this post."
Reddit users turned their attention to another charity, Water.org, but the charity shut down the subreddit's campaign page within hours.
