Wrong-Way Driver Dies, Causes Several Crashes on Indianapolis Highway

Published January 14, 2015

Associated Press

Indiana State Police say a wrong-way driver was killed in one of several crashes he caused on an Indianapolis highway during the morning commute.

The first reports came in about 7 a.m. Thursday about a vehicle going east in the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 near the city's downtown. The fatal crash happened near the highway's junction with I-65 just south of downtown.

Police say several vehicles were involved in related crashes and some other people were injured. The crashes caused long traffic delays, with police closing some lanes for about two hours.

Investigators didn't immediately have an explanation for why the driver was going the wrong way or where the vehicle got on the highway.
