U.K. Fugitive Facing Attempted Murder Charge Arrested in Washington

A fugitive facing an attempted murder charge in the United Kingdom was arrested in the Seattle area a month after his car collided with a Washington State Patrol trooper's vehicle.

Julio Martins-Paes was taken into custody Wednesday by the Pacific Northwest Fugitive Apprehension Task Force at a home in Mountlake Terrace, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

He had been charged with drunken driving after the crash Dec. 12 on Interstate 5 south of Seattle. During that investigation officials learned Martins-Paes is accused of stabbing a woman four years ago.

Scotland Yard said Martins-Paes, of the East London area, is suspected of stabbing his partner on an off-ramp in East London on Feb. 1, 2006 — apparently after an argument that erupted as the pair were driving.

The woman, who police did not name, was stabbed in the chest and thigh as she tried to flee the vehicle.

Less than three weeks after the attack, Martins-Paes's teenage daughter Beatriz was convicted of fatally stabbing a 15-year-old with a kitchen knife at an East London birthday party. The murder drew considerable media attention in British capital, where knife crime is a hot-button issue.

Beatriz Martins-Paes was sentenced to a minimum of 14 years in prison.
