Truck Driver Jumps Off N.Y. Bridge After Cop Chase

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

A driver being chased by police jumped off a 140-foot-high bridge in a New York City suburb and was rescued from the Hudson River, police said. The man was in critical condition Wednesday.

The chase began in New Jersey when John Fuller, 39, of New York City, failed to stop his tractor-trailer cab for a routine inspection Tuesday night, New Jersey State Police Sgt. Alex Pabon said. Why he did not stop was unknown.

When the driver entered New York, authorities there took over the chase through city streets and highways in the Bronx and suburban New York counties.

Fuller stopped his vehicle on the Tappan Zee Bridge, a three-mile span between Westchester and Rockland counties that is about 140 feet above the water at its midspan.

Although he was moaning and losing consciousness as rescuers approached, he was reluctant to be rescued, said Sleepy Hollow Fire Chief John Korzelius.

Fuller was in critical condition in Westchester Medical Center on Wednesday morning, Tarrytown State Police Sgt. John Maasz said.
