Train Derailment Causes Amtrak Disruptions

A freight train derailment in the South Bronx on Tuesday morning knocked out all Amtrak (search) service between Penn Station and New Haven, Conn., authorities said.

A CSX (search) freight train derailed at 7:15 a.m. in the Amtrak-owned Oak Point Yard, blocking some tracks and damaging overhead lines that provide power to Amtrak's trains.

The outage forced the suspension of all trains between the Manhattan rail hub and the Connecticut station, according to a release from Amtrak.

In addition, there was only limited service on Amtrak between New Haven and Boston, the release said. Amtrak officials were hopeful that service would resume before the evening rush hour.

According to Amtrak officials, Metro-North Railroad (search) was honoring Amtrak tickets for passengers wishing to travel between New York Grand Central Terminal and New Haven.
