Study: No Foster Children Died in HIV/AIDS Drug Trials

An investigation of a nearly 20-year clinical drug trial for HIV and AIDS has found no evidence that any of the New York City foster children who participated in the study died as a direct result of the medications.

That is the conclusion of the Vera Institute of Justice to be released Wednesday. New York City commissioned the nonprofit group in 2005 to investigate claims that 532 children in the trials were given drugs known to cause death and selected without their parents' knowledge.

The drug trials were conducted between the late 1980s and 2005. The city's child welfare agency developed a policy to allow foster children to participate at a time when there was no approved treatments for children infected with HIV and AIDs.
