Italian researchers have discovered that horny goat weed, a Chinese herb, is a potential alternative to Viagra, Reuters reported Monday.
“This could be the natural Viagra,” said Mario Dell’Agli, a researcher at the University of Milan who led the study. “The novelty is that we have synthesized a new molecule that one day may be able to replace Viagra.”
Horny goat weed has always been known as a natural aphrodisiac in China, and taking it would not produce the common side effects that sometimes come along with erectile dysfunction drugs such as headaches, upset stomach or visual problems.
Dell’Agli and his team modified the plant’s icariin compound and found it blocked the erection-inhibiting enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5, which restricts blood flow around the body, in the same way Viagra does.
More tests will need to be conducted on animals and humans, Dell’Agli said.
