Published January 13, 2015

Red-carpet fashion maven Steven Cojocaru (search) has undergone a successful kidney transplant.

Cojocaru, who has polycystic kidney disease (search), said Monday that he was thankful for the transplant of a friend's organ on Friday.

"The gift that has been given to me says much about our capacity for great compassion and generosity, and I hope it sends an inspiring message to others about the importance of organ donation," he said in a statement.

Polycystic kidney disease is a hereditary disorder that causes the growth of cysts on the kidney. The disease can reduce kidney function and eventually cause kidney failure.

Cojocaru, who became known for his snappy assessment of celebrity awards show fashion, announced in November that he needed a transplant.

He is a contributor to NBC's "Today" show and a correspondent for the syndicated "Entertainment Tonight" and "The Insider" television shows.

Cojocaru, who lives in Los Angeles, said he plans to return to work after "a short recovery period" at home.
