Standoff at Mo. Nursing Home Ends With 2 Dead

Published January 14, 2015

Associated Press

Eastern Missouri deputies killed a man Saturday after he fatally wounded his estranged wife in the parking lot of the nursing home where she worked.

Capt. Ralph Brown of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said deputies were called to the Baisch Nursing Center in De Soto around 2 p.m. after receiving a report that shots had been fired.

Deputies watched the 70-year-old man scream at his 68-year-old wife and shove her into the pavement. At one point, he got into the driver's side of a two-door convertible while he continued holding a gun to his wife's stomach as she hung out of the vehicle.

Brown said he shot her in the back when she broke free from his grasp and tried to escape.

A tactical officer then fired on the man, killing him. The woman was flown to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The names of the shooter and the victim were not immediately released, pending notification of relatives.
