Small Plane Crash Kills 2 in Southern California

A small plane crashed in a heavy fog shortly after takeoff from Corona Municipal Airport on Friday, killing the pilot and a passenger, authorities said.

Wreckage of the Piper Cherokee was located Friday night about 1 1/2-miles northwest of the airport, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor.

The plane, which was headed to Lake Havasu, Ariz., disappeared in fog after people on the ground heard the sound of its engine apparently quitting.

Authorities said the pilot never contacted air traffic control and the plane did not return to the airport in Riverside County.

Helicopter crews had searched a swampy area behind Prado Dam, an Army Corps of Engineers flood control and water storage project on the Santa Ana River. Its reservoir sprawls over thousands of acres of land.
