Settlement Reached in Arrest Over Ohio Twin's Death

Published January 14, 2015

Associated Press

An Ohio man charged, but then cleared, of killing his identical twin brother has reached a tentative $950,000 settlement with the city of Columbus over an error that led to his arrest and trial.

Attorneys for 20-year-old Derris Lewis say the amount, recommended by a mediator, has been accepted by both sides. It must still be approved by city council.

Dennis Lewis was killed during a January 2008 robbery at their mother's home.

Prosecutors charged Derris Lewis with aggravated murder, but the case ended in mistrial. They later dropped the charge after a test failed to find Derris Lewis' blood on a palm print that had been a main piece of evidence.

Columbus police blamed miscommunication on the agency's error.
