Scottsdale Man Changes Mind in Guilty Plea to Five Killings

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

A man who has previously said he wanted to plead guilty in the shooting deaths of five people in a Mesa home has changed his mind.

A judge is now expected to set a trial date for William Craig Miller of Scottsdale.

The latest development came Friday during a hearing for Miller in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Miller is accused of fatally shooting Steven Duffy, 30, and Duffy's girlfriend, Tammy Lovell, 32, in their home.

Both were former employees of Miller's who became informants against him in an arson case.

A police report said Miller was trying to get more than $1 million from an insurance company for the fire.

Also killed during the shootings last year were Duffy's brother, 18-year-old Shane Duffy, and Lovell's children — Cassandra Lovell, 15, and Jacob Lovell, 10.
