Reward Grows for Abuser of Dog Found in Trash with Mouth Duct-Taped Shut

The mixed breed shepherd found in a garbage bin with its mouth duct-taped shut lost part of his right front leg but gained a new name, a bank account and a growing list of supporters who want his former owner punished.

Reward money, first offered at $500 by veterinarian Steven Osborne, grew to $1,850 on Thursday and the dog got a name from Osborne's staff: Lucky.

Lucky was in serious but stable condition Friday after Osborne removed the part of his leg that was dangling from skin when he was found Wednesday.

The dog, with bite marks on his face, was likely a victim of illegal dog fighting and used as a bait dog for training.

After news reports about the dog, local company Certified Automatic Fire Sprinklers matched Osborne's $500 reward offer and Animal Friends Humane Society donated another $500. Individuals also called Osborne Animal Clinic offering $350 more.

Osborne's wife, Kim, said they had more wanting to donate but they asked people to wait until they could set up a tax-deductible account at Wachovia Bank.

The account is called "Justice for Lucky" and all donations go toward the reward. Osborne will cover medical costs. Decatur police will determine who gets the reward if they find out who mistreated the dog. The money will be returned if no one is arrested.
