Neighborhood children in Bakersfield, Calif., have found a body that police have confimred is 9-year-old Zane Newton, who was the focus of an Ambert Alert issued several hours earlier, The Bakersfield Californian reported.
The newspaper reported the children found the body buried in a dirt field and told family members who climbed a fence at the site and started crying.
Another 9-year-old boy told police he and Zane were playing in the intersection of a street when a man in a car pulled up and started shooting at them, hitting Zane in the shoulder, the newspaper reported.
The suspect, who was believed to be wearing a mask, then chased the boys grabbing Zane, the newspaper reported.
Police said the weapon used in the alleged shooting may have been a paint ball gun, The Bakersfield Californian reported.
