Poll: Bush, Kerry Tied in West Virginia

President Bush and Democrat John Kerry (search) are tied among likely voters in West Virginia, according to a poll released Thursday

Bush and Kerry both had the backing of 46 percent while independent Ralph Nader (search) was backed by 2 percent in the poll by the American Research Group of Manchester (search), N.H. Six percent of those surveyed said they were undecided.

Bush narrowly won West Virginia over Democrat Al Gore (search) in 2000 even though voter registration in the state favors Democrat over Republicans by a 2-to-1 margin. Previous Republican winners in the past 70 years were Dwight Eisenhower (search) in 1956, Richard Nixon in 1972 and Ronald Reagan (search) in 1984.

All three of those elections were landslide victories for the Republicans.

The poll of 600 likely voters was taken Tuesday and Wednesday. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
