Police in Boone say the report of a gunman that led to Monday's lockdown at Appalachian State University was a hoax.
The Boone Police Department said Tuesday the person who claimed to have seen a gunman admitted fabricating the story. Police said there was no armed or masked suspect. The report led to a campus-wide lockdown and the cancellation of all night classes.
Police said the person could face a misdemeanor charge of filing a false police. No charges have been filed. The person wasn't identified.
University officials said classes were back to normal Thursday.
