With the ink barely dry on the nominations, oddsmakers already have made their picks for this year’s Academy Awards.
“No Country for Old Men” is the favorite to win the Oscar for Best Picture with 8-11 odds, according to Ladbrokes.com. The British betting site released its odds for the top categories within hours of the press conference this morning announcing the nominations.
“Atonement,” at 7-2 odds, is the leading underdog for top film of 2007, with “Michael Clayton” holding the long-shot spot at 10-1 odds. The other nominees are “There Will Be Blood” (4-1) and “Juno” (8-1).
Daniel Day-Lewis, star of “There Will Be Blood,” is the overwhelming favorite to take the Best Actor award, with 1-8 odds, according to Ladbrokes. That means a winning $8 bet would pay out only $1.
The other nominees are Johnny Depp, 7-1; George Clooney, 12-1; Viggo Mortensen, 16-1, and Tommy Lee Jones, 20-1.
In the Best Actress category, Julie Christie is Ladbrokes’ pick at 2-5 odds for her performance in “Away from Her. The other nominees are Marion Cotillard, 3-1; Ellen Page, 6-1; Cate Blanchett, 16-1, and Laura Linney, 25-1.
And the Best Director category is essentially a toss-up, with “No Country for Old Men” directors Ethan and Joel Coen edging out Paul Thomas Anderson (“There Will be Blood”) and Julian Schnabel (“The Diving Bell & the Butterfly”) for top pick, Ladbrokes says. “Juno” director Jason Reitman and “Michael Clayton” director Tony Gilroy are considered long shots.
The awards are scheduled to be presented Feb. 24.
