Parents of Murdered Army Nurse's Husband: We Stand by Our Son

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

The parents of a Marine corporal accused of killing his estranged wife say they stand by their son and believe in him.

The Fayetteville Observer reported Thursday that Florian and Lana Wimunc would not talk about their son's marriage to 24-year-old 2nd Lt. Holley Wimunc or the criminal charges against their son, 23-year-old Cpl. John Patrick Wimunc.

But the couple said that they loved Holley Wimunc and their son loved her two children, who were from a previous relationship.

John Wimunc is charged with murder, first-degree arson and conspiracy to commit arson. Holley Wimunc's body was found three days after a suspicious fire at her Fayetteville apartment.

Wimunc and a fellow Marine faced a judge in their first court appearances on Tuesday.

John Wimunc's fellow serviceman at Camp Lejeune, Lance Cpl. Kyle Alden is charged with first-degree arson, conspiracy to commit arson and accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. Alden asked for a court-appointed attorney.

The next hearing is scheduled for Aug. 5.

Holley Wimunc was from Dubuque, Iowa, and was based at Fort Bragg, where she served as an Army nurse.
