Nevada Gold Mine Worker Missing More Than 5,000 Feet Under Ground After Accident

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

A gold mine worker was missing Wednesday and feared trapped deep under ground in northeastern Nevada, company officials said.

The man was working on a loader some 5,600 feet below the surface at the Midas underground project, a gold mine, when the ground gave way on Tuesday, Newmont Mining Corp. spokeswoman Mary Korpi said.

The mine was evacuated and shut down.

Korpi said search and rescue crews using camera equipment located the loader early Wednesday but had no immediate contact with the worker.
