Napa Wine Tour Guide Arrested for Bank Robbery Spree

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

Authorities have arrested a Napa Valley wine tour guide on suspicion of robbing at least 17 banks in California and Utah since July.

The FBI says 64-year-old Art Cheney was arrested by a California Highway Patrol near Marysville Wednesday just hours after hitting a bank in Fairfield.

Authorities have called him the "Highway 101 Bandit" because most of the banks were along the Highway 101 corridor.

Cheney had been giving wine tours in Napa Valley for about a decade, but friends say he seemed to have vanished early this year.

He was jailed and arraigned on one count of armed robbery in federal court in Sacramento on Thursday.

Officials say he had served prison time more than a decade ago for robbing a bank in Southern California.
