Myanmar Cyclone Damage at a Glance

Here's a look at the extent of damage and losses wrought by the May 2-3 Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar. The first full assessment of the disaster was released Monday by the United Nations, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and Myanmar's military-ruled government:

— Nargis left at least 84,537 people dead, 53,836 missing and presumed dead and 19,539 injured. Some 2.4 million people were severely affected by the cyclone with up to 800,000 displaced.

— Damage was estimated at about US$4 billion, including US$1.7 billion worth of destroyed public assets and US$2.3 billion loss of income.

— The economic losses are estimated to wipe out 2.7 percent of Myanmar's projected gross domestic product in 2008 and are expected to result in lower growth through 2009.

— About 450,000 homes were destroyed and 350,000 others damaged. More than 4,000 schools were damaged, along with about 75 percent of health facilities.

— The wall of water destroyed about 600,000 hectares (1.5 million acres) of farmlands and 60 percent of agricultural implements. The cyclone affected 23,500 square kilometers of the Irrawaddy delta — almost twice the size of Lebanon.

— More than 900,000 people will depend on food aid at least until food stocks improve in the October/November harvest season.

— Myanmar needs at least US$1 billion over the next three years for recovery and rehabilitation. The U.N. has appealed for US$482 million in immediate assistance but is still short of US$300 million.
