Mexico City Aims to Break World Kissing Record on Valentine's Day

Published January 14, 2015

Associated Press

Some people might want to celebrate Valentine's Day with a kiss for the record books.

In Mexico City, they're hoping that thousands of people do. City officials are inviting them all to the capital's huge central plaza later today to break the world record for the most people kissing at one time.

The city tourism office expects more than 35,000 will take part. The idea is "to show that warmth and love" are at the heart of the Mexican Republic.

Another goal is showing the love during a violent time in Mexico's war on drug traffickers. More than 6,000 people died in drug-related violence last year.

The smooch-fest will be followed by a free concert by Mexico's most popular ranchera singer, Vicente Fernandez.
