Man Charged With Animal Cruelty for Driving 100 Dogs Cross-Country in Filthy School Bus

A former Colorado man has been charged in Montana with felony cruelty to animals.

Phillip A. Brode was driving cross-country with 100 malnourished dogs crammed into a filthy school bus, authorities said.

Police arrested him on Sunday evening in in Rocker, Montana.

Butte police said the 60-year-old Brode was traveling from his former home in La Jara to Alaska.

The dogs were examined by veterinarians and are being housed in a Butte animal shelter or in temporary kennels set up in Butte.

Brode was jailed on a charge of felony cruelty to animals.

A judge set bail at $10,000.
