A landslide in southwestern China engulfed and killed at least 11 people Sunday, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

The landslide also injured six others — three of them seriously — in Kangding county's Shiji town in Sichuan province, Xinhua said. Disaster relief workers were helping to resettle hundreds of villagers forced to flee their homes.

Nearly 100 cubic meters (3,530 cubic feet) of rocks fell in the landslide early Sunday, smashing 12 houses, the report said, quoting Wang Yingping, director of the county's disaster relief office.

The landslide was likely triggered by heavy rains that have been pounding the region for a month, said Tian Long, head of the county's press office, according to Xinhua.
