Immigration Officials Discover 2 Smuggling Tunnels Along U.S.-Mexico Border

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

Two incomplete tunnels have been discovered along the U.S.-Mexico border in what authorities describe as a failed attempt to sneak people into the United States illegally.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says each tunnel was about three feet wide, three feet high and five feet underground. They were about 44 yards apart, near San Diego's Otay Mesa border crossing.

Authorities say the tunnels were less than ten feet long. One extended five feet into the United States and the other went two feet in the U.S. The entrances in Tijuana, Mexico, were covered with plywood.

The passages were discovered yesterday in a joint effort by U.S. and Mexican authorities. They are among dozens found along the border in recent years. Many are clustered around San Diego and Nogales, Arizona.
