Hi, I'm Bill O'Reilly. Thanks for watching us tonight. We'd like to welcome our new viewers in southern Pennsylvania and northern Maryland on Clearview Cable. We hope you like The Factor.
Now, yesterday on the program, I had made a $100 bet with Dr. Ethan Nadelmann, a drug policy guy. I didn't like the Super Bowl ad tying drugs to terrorism. The result of that bet will be revealed in the most ridiculous segment later on.
Talking Points memo this evening links illegal drugs and Enron. Both are anti-American.
An estimated $14 million Americans have bought illegal drugs in the past 30 days, according to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse. Every one of those Americans is hurting his or her country.
That's because drug profits often go to criminals who kill people, corrupt children, ruin working-class neighborhoods, create addiction, bribe officials, and generally make mayhem.
Overseas, drug profits have supported the Taliban, devastated the countries of Colombia, Bolivia, and Peru, financed the Mafia, fueled vicious Russian organized crime gangs, as well as gangs like the Crips and the Bloods back here.
Each time an American puts money in the pocket of a dope pusher, more corruption is made possible.
Now, many American dopers rationalize their behavior by saying if alcohol is legal, then drugs should be too. Well, that's not your call. Every poll on the subject shows the vast majority of Americans do not want drugs legalized. They fully realize that putting even more intoxicants on the market is not a smart thing to do.
All one has to do is look at the drunk driving deaths and the alcohol rehab clinics to see the damage done. It is foolish and destructive to mainstream even more mind-altering substances.
But for the drug user, all rational arguments in the world don't matter. They want to get high, their country be damned.
Talking Points has never been more certain of a position. Buying illegal drugs hurts society and leads to dreadful things. If you care about your country, don't do it.
Now for Enron.
The American people, generally speaking, work hard and believe in the capitalistic system. Because of the greed of Enron executives, that trust has been violated, and our economic system has been severely tarnished. The Bush administration must make an example of liars and cheats in the corporate world. They must pay a huge price as a warning to other greedy white-collars.
It will be very interesting to see how aggressively the Justice Department pursues this investigation. Will it give us the old Marc Rich pardon scenario, basically a do-nothing, smoke-and-mirrors probe? Or will John Ashcroft actually encourage some law enforcement here?
This is Mr. Ashcroft's test. The Enron case is so important that the attorney general needs to step up and show us he actually cares about justice. Anybody can do photo-ops and beef up security at the Olympics, but it takes skill and determination to put sleazy executives behind bars.
We all saw what Janet Reno was made of in the campaign finance investigation. Now we'll see if Mr. Ashcroft is an honest public servant.
And that's the memo.
The Most Ridiculous Item of the Day
Time now for "The Most Ridiculous Item of the Day."
Last night, I made a $100 bet with Ethan Nadelmann of Drug Policy Alliance Group. I said Middle Eastern men were involved in smuggling of the drug ecstasy to the U.S.A, using Holland as a transit point. Dr. Nadelmann said I was crazy.
OK, here's what the Office of the National Drug Control Policy says and we quote, "Drug Enforcement Agency reporting demonstrates the involvement of Israeli criminal organizations in Ecstasy smuggling. Some of these individuals are of Russian and Georgian descent and have Middle Eastern ties."
Well, doctor, you can send a hundred bucks to Habitat for Humanity in New York City and zip me over a copy of the canceled check so I can show it to the folks. It would be ridiculous not to do that.
