Haitian Students Burn Tires, Throw Rocks at Police To Protest Curriculum Changes

Published January 14, 2015

Associated Press

More than two dozen Haitian students burned tires and threw rocks at police outside a Port-au-Prince teachers college Tuesday to protest curriculum changes.

The roughly 30 protesters said police responded with tear gas, the smell of which still lingered at the Ecole Normale Superieure near the presidential palace in Port-au-Prince.

National police made no comment.

It was the third student protest here in recent days. Demonstrators say administrators eliminated math and science classes to focus on school management, and they are demanding better training to become educators.

Most Haitian schools are private and many teachers underqualified. Disputes over pay have prompted unrelated protests at several high schools this month.
