Rep. Dave Weldon, R-Fla., will retire at the end of his term, which ends next January, FOX News confirms.
Weldon, first elected in the GOP tidal wave of 1994, is among some two dozen House Republican lawmakers who won't be running for re-election in November.
Fox confirms that Rep. Dave Weldon (R-FL) will retire at the end of this term. He is the 25th House Republican to announce he will not seek Re-election.
Weldon was first elected in the GOP tidal wave of 1994, and is serving his seventh term. He sits on the influential appropriations committee.
Sources tell FOX that more retirements could be announced over the weekend, and January already has been a busy month for resignation and retirement announcments.
Weldon's announcement comes on the heels of Thursday's announcement by Rep. Jim Walsh, R-N.Y., that he would not seek re-election. Last week, Rep. Richard Baker, R-La., said he will resign in February to head a hedge-fund management association, and the week before, embattled Rep. John Doolittle, R-Calif., said he would not seek another term.
Far fewer Democrats have announced they will not try to hold onto their seats, as the party hopes to retain — and possibly add to — its slim majorities in the House and the Senate.
