Germany to Block Child Porn Web Sites

Published January 14, 2015

Associated Press

German lawmakers have approved legislation that will allow for the blocking of Web sites showing pornographic content involving minors.

The law passed Thursday requires a stop sign to be posted on sites that are to be listed with Germany's federal criminal authorities. A five-member group is to determine which sites are to be listed.

The law has come under fire by some for failing to do enough to prevent users from accessing child porn over the Internet. Others charge the measure infringes on guarantees on freedom of information.

Germany's government has argued the law will make it more difficult for users to access the information posted on the sites. It will be up for renewal in 2012.
