Developments associated with Hurricane Charley:

— Officials urged almost 2 million people to evacuate from flood-prone areas of Florida's west coast. They warned that Charley could submerge parts of Tampa's downtown and neighboring areas.

— The hurricane roared across Cuba early Friday, ripping apart roofs, downing power lines and yanking up huge palm trees. No casualties or major damage had been reported.

— Tampa International Airport (search) is expected to stop flights at noon Friday. Flights from Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport are scheduled to take off through early Friday afternoon.

— Amtrak (search) suspended train service between New York City and Miami for Friday. Amtrak's Auto Train that operates between Lorton, Va. and Sanford, Fla., is also canceled Friday.

— Tornadoes spun off from the remnants of Tropical Storm Bonnie touched down in eastern North Carolina, killing three people and injuring more than two dozen others. Buildings also were damaged, and power outages were reported.
