Ex-Student Arrested in North Carolina Teacher's Murder

Published January 14, 2015

Associated Press

Police say a suspect in the death of a North Carolina middle school teacher is a former student mentored by the victim.

The Charlotte Observer reported that 22-year-old Ashanti Bess was being held Thursday without bond in the Mecklenburg County jail. Bess is charged in the death of 38-year-old Anthony Davis, whose body was found in his home Monday. Davis had been shot to death in his bed.

Police say they found Davis' missing car Wednesday near Bess' mother's house in Charlotte.

Davis' family members say he had been mentoring Bess for six years. They say Davis, a teacher at Randolph Middle School, mentored troubled teenagers.
