Death of 5-Time Widow's First Husband Re-Examined

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

Authorities in Ohio say they're re-examining the slaying of the first husband of a woman with five dead spouses.

Medina County Sheriff's Office detective Scott Phillips said Monday that cold-case investigators are looking at the unsolved murder of Clarence Malone. He was shot once in the back of the head in 1970.

Malone's marriage to Betty Neumar broke up in the early 1950s. The 76-year-old Neumar was recently charged in North Carolina with one count of solicitation of murder in the 1986 death of her fourth husband, Harold Gentry.

North Carolina investigators have urged authorities elsewhere to look into the deaths of the other four husbands. Police are doing so in Ohio, Florida and Georgia.

Neumar's attorney didn't immediately return a call Monday seeking comment.
