D.C. House Representation Bill Fails Key Senate Vote

The Senate has voted not to advance a measure that would give D.C. a vote in the House.

The vote was 57 in favor of the measure and 42 against it — three votes short of passing. The procedural vote required 60 votes to be considered by the full Senate.

Ilir Zherka, executive director of the group D.C. Vote, says even though they didn't get the vote they wanted, there was a small victory. He says this was the first time in 30 years that a majority of senators voted to support D.C. voting rights.

Zherka says they won't give up. He says they will get to work in the states to persuade more senators to change their minds.

But it could be some time before the issue makes it this far in the Senate again.

D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton is allowed to vote only in House committees.
