Who knew Hillary Clinton was a comic?
Her deft comment and perfectly timed silence on the issue of having dealt with "evil men" got laughs and I think got her votes too.
Now, I don't want you to think that I think you have to be a comedian to be president.
But I will say this, you have to have a sense of humor.
I think "that" is essential.
Senator Clinton can feign all the surprise in the world at everyone thinking she was talking about her wandering eyes husband.
But she was. She is. And she's good.
And she's funny.
And what better way to refute the negatives than laugh at them?
Like Ronald Reagan debunking the age thing by ribbing Walter Mondale in 1984 that he wouldn't hold his opponent's relative youth and inexperience against him.
Or John Kennedy dealing with the rich, spoiled kid jibes by saying his dad Joe had money, but he sure as hell wasn't going to buy his son a landslide.
Or even Richard Nixon himself popping up on "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" and saying, "Sock it to me"?
I know, a lot of these things are pre-written, pre-tested, even pre-marketed.
But they work. They rate. And they register.
Yes, even if they embarrass.
Actually, all the better when they do.
