Christians Make Palm Sunday Pilgrimmage to Jerusalem

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

On this Palm Sunday, some 20,000 people have re-traced the path Christ took into the Old City of Jerusalem.

After several years of small crowds because of Israeli-Palestinian violence, Christian pilgrims were back in large numbers for the second year in a row.

Israeli police were also there, some of them on horseback, to make sure it all remained peaceful.

The walk from the Mount of Olives and, eventually, to St. Stephen's Gate took about three hours. It was far from quiet, as some marchers strummed guitars, banged drums or chanted.

Still other pilgrims played a variety of songs and prayers over loudspeakers.

A Catholic nun from New Jersey who took part says it reminded her of a Thanksgiving Day parade.
