Black History Museum Will be Built on National Mall

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

The National Museum of African American History and Culture will be built on the National Mall near the Washington Monument.

That's according to the Smithsonian Institution.

The National Mall is already home to monuments to presidents and several museums that are part of the Smithsonian.

Chief Justice John Roberts, who serves as chancellor of the Smithsonian Board of Regents, presided over the voice vote choosing the site.

Smithsonian officials say the five-acre site will likely include a 350-thousand square-foot building. That would be comparable in size to the institution's National Museum of the American Indian, also located on the mall.
