Baucus Undergoes Heart Procedure

Sen. Max Baucus (search), D-Mont., underwent a procedure at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota Tuesday to help correct an irregular heart beat, his office said Wednesday.

Baucus had a catheter inserted to correct an atrial fibrillation, a fairly common heart rhythm abnormality, the office said in a written statement.

In an accompanying statement from Mayo Clinic (search), doctors said the procedure eliminated the problem and that Baucus was recovering faster than anticipated.

He remained hospitalized Wednesday.

Atrial fibrillation (search) is a condition in which the two upper chambers of the he complications including stroke and congestive heart failure, Mayo Clinic said.

Baucus underwent testing for the condition last week and the catheter procedure was performed after he did not respond to other "medical therapy," the clinic said.
