Avalanches Kill 2 at British Columbia's Whistler Resort

Published January 14, 2015

Associated Press

Two men are dead after a pair of avalanches at British Columbia's Whistler Blackcomb resort.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say a 26-year-old snowboarder was killed Thursday in an avalanche on Whistler Mountain.

On Wednesday evening, a 37-year-old man from Whistler was killed in an avalanche on Blackcomb Mountain. That man's body was found Thursday.

In both cases, police say the men were in areas that were marked off-limits.

Whistler will host the alpine events of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The avalanches come just days after eight snowmobilers were killed near Fernie, British Columbia in a series of back-to-back avalanches in the area's backcountry.
