American Injured in Iran Quake Returns to U.S.

Published January 14, 2015

An American woman injured in last month's devastating earthquake (search) in Iran was in stable condition at a hospital Tuesday, a day after returning to the United States to be with her parents.

Adele Freedman, 39, was admitted to New York Hospital Medical Center (search) of Queens on Monday after flying back from Tehran, Iran. Metal pins have been inserted into Freedman's leg, which was crushed.

Freedman's fiance, Tobb Dell'Oro, 41, was killed in the Dec. 26 quake. The couple had been vacationing in Iran when the roof of their hotel in Bam collapsed, pinning them for hours.

"I'm physically fine," Freedman told Newsday. "It's very, very difficult because every two minutes I think about Tobb. ... We had a whole life planned."

Freedman's parents traveled to Iran last week to visit her and to break the news about Dell'Oro's death. They tried to arrange for his body to be flown back on the same flight with her, but were unable to sort out the details.

Freedman grew up on Long Island, where her parents still live. She and Dell'Oro had lived in Redwood City, Calif., where she was a partner at a law firm and he owned a market-research company.

"I don't know how I'm going to go back to our house," she said. "I don't know how I'm going to do anything. We did everything together."

The 6.6-magnitude quake devastated the city of Bam (search) and killed more than 30,000 people.
