Alaska Unveils 'Grizzly' New Quarter

A grizzly clenching a salmon in its jaws as it emerges from water beneath a small waterfall.
That was the design chosen Monday by Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for the state's commemorative quarter.
Palin and members of the Alaska Commemorative Coin Commission unveiled the winning choice at the Alaska Mint, a gift shop in downtown Anchorage.
Palin had Alaskans weigh in on four proposed designs that emphasized Alaska's wildlife, rugged landscape or pioneering spirit.
One choice depicted a polar bear with the midnight sun behind it. Another featured a musher and dog team in front of Mount McKinley.
The other choice was a bearded miner panning for gold with Mount McKinley in the distance.
The design will be forwarded to the U.S. Mint, which will release the coin in the fall of 2008.
Since 1999, a different state coin has been released every ten weeks in the order that the states joined the union.
