Hi, I'm Bill O'Reilly. Thank you for watching us tonight.
A tale of two Bushes is the subject of this evening's Talking Points memo. President Bush and Governor Jeb Bush of Florida both have major embarrassments on their hands. FBI director Robert Mueller, a Bush appointee, has been accused by his own agents in Minneapolis of covering up a major FBI screw-up involving Zacarias Moussaoui before 9/11.
Special Agent Coleen Rowley says Mueller allowed D.C. Bates (ph) agents to distort information provided by Minneapolis agents. This comes on the heels of Mueller and Attorney General Ashcroft not telling Mr. Bush about the Moussaoui screwup until seven months after they learned about it.
Tomorrow Ashcroft will announce a major reorganization of the FBI. But so what? If Mueller is allowed to keep his job, the bureau's credibility will remain tainted. Americans must demand that those in charge of protecting us be honest and forthcoming, not coverup artists.
President Bush is not a confrontational person, so I'll doubt he'll file -- fire Mueller, at least right away. But he should. He should also promote Special Agent Rowley, who put her career on the line to tell Americans the truth about the dishonesty of the FBI in the Zacarias Moussaoui case.
Down in Florida, Jeb Bush has a similar problem. He promised to clean up the child welfare agency down there, which was a disgrace under the previous governor, Lawton Chiles (ph). Well, it turns out that Governor Bush has failed to do that. The child agency is still a disgrace, and hundreds of poor children have been damaged, including 4-year-old Rilya Wilson, who is probably dead because her state caseworker did not supervise her.
Governor Bush has not produced that caseworker, Deborah Muskelly, nor has he fired the woman he placed in charge of the child welfare agency, Kathleen Kearney.
Talking Points believes that all elected politicians must hold people accountable for their performance. Did Jeb Bush know that foster kids were in danger in Florida? Probably not. But Miss Kearney did and did nothing about it.
Did President Bush know that the FBI blew the Moussaoui investigation? Probably not, but Robert Mueller did know. So Mueller and Kearney should be fired, period. Difficult problems like tracking down terrorists and protecting unwanted children will never be solved unless strict discipline is imposed by those in power.
Excuses walk. Let's get tough and let politics be damned.
And that's the memo.
The Most Ridiculous Item of the Day
Time for "The Most Ridiculous Item of the Day."
The hits just keep on coming. Many of you have sent e-mails about the nasty things Charles Grodin is saying about me. Just know this, Mr. Grodin had a talk program on MSNBC that failed. And we have invited him on The Factor a number of times, but he won't appear. He prefers to take shots behind my back. And that says a lot about Mr. Grodin.
Also, some of the conservative web sites continue to pound "The Radio Factor." A report on one of them says the Snaps rating report says the program is doing poorly. One problem. There are no Snap radio ratings. They don't exist. After three weeks on the air, we're having fun and doing well. Remember, be skeptical about what you read, especially on the Net. It could be ridiculous
