Yaya Toure of Ivory Coast earns 3rd straight African soccer player of the year award

Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure of Manchester City has won the African player of the year award for a third straight time.

He beat out countryman Didier Drogba, the Galatasaray striker and two-time recipient, and Nigeria's up-and-coming star, Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel. The 30-year-old Toure player called the honor "unbelievable."

Nigeria swept all the other major honors at a gala in Lagos.

Stephen Keshi won coach of the year after reviving the national team and leading the Super Eagles to their first African Cup win in 20 years. The Super Eagles won the team of the year award, and the under-17 Golden Eaglets took the trophy for the youth team.
