St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Yankees placed pitcher Ivan Nova on the 15-day disabled list Sunday after an MRI revealed a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Nova was forced to leave New York's 16-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday after feeling discomfort in his right elbow in the fifth inning.

The 27-year-old right-hander underwent an MRI Sunday, which revealed the severity of the injury. Nova will be further examined Monday by Dr. Christopher Ahmad to determine if season-ending surgery is required.

Nova went 2-2 with an inflated 8.27 earned run average over four starts this season.

The Yankees did get a bit of good news heading into Sunday's series finale against the Rays, as first baseman Mark Teixeira was activated from the 15-day DL.

Teixeira landed on the DL back on April 5 after straining his right hamstring in the second inning of an eventual 7-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

The 34-year-old switch hitter batted just .250 (3-for-12) with two RBI in four games this year. He was limited to just 15 games last season due to a wrist injury that required surgery.

Also Sunday, the Yankees optioned infielder Scott Sizemore to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, designated pitcher Matt Daley for assignment, recalled pitcher Preston Claiborne from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and recalled pitcher Bryan Mitchell from Double-A Trenton.
