The Washington Wizards announced Monday that Don Newman will join the team as an assistant coach under head coach Randy Wittman.

Newman spent the last seven seasons as an assistant coach under Gregg Popovich for the San Antonio Spurs, helping the club to a pair of NBA championships (2005 and 2007) and five Southwest division titles.

"Don is an outstanding coach and a great addition to our staff," said Wittman. "He brings championship experience from his time with the Spurs and has been very successful in every stop of his career."

Newman began his NBA coaching career with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1999 before joining the New Jersey Nets for the 2003-04 season. He also served as an assistant for USA basketball during the 2002 World championships.

His only head coaching experience came at the collegiate level when he worked the sidelines for Sacramento State (1992-97) before serving as interim head coach at Arizona State in 1997.
