St. Paul, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - The Minnesota Wild signed defenseman Marco Scandella to a five-year contract extension on Saturday.

Scandella, who scored the overtime winner against Dallas on Friday, will earn $20 million over the length of his contract, according to The Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

The 24-year-old has posted a career-high five goals and three assists over 20 games so far this season.

"Marco has shown tremendous improvement in his career and is one of the best young, two-way defensemen in the NHL," Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher said. "He is a hard-working, energetic player who is just scratching the surface of his potential."

Scandella, who was drafted in the second round (55th overall) by the Wild in 2008, has totaled 12 goals and 40 points over 185 games in his five seasons with Minnesota.
