White Sox Stewart just misses perfect game in win

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (Reuters) - Rookie pitcher Zach Stewart flirted with a rare perfect game before settling for a one-hit victory in the Chicago White Sox's 4-0 triumph over Minnesota on Monday.

The 24-year-old Stewart, making just his eighth career start, took a perfect game into the eighth inning, where Twins third baseman Danny Valencia hit a lead-off double to ruin the streak of perfection.

Stewart recovered from the disappointment with six straight outs to complete a magical effort that included nine strikeouts.

"I felt good. It was one of those nights where the ball felt good coming out of my hand," Stewart told reporters.

"(Catcher Tyler Flowers) called a great game and I went right along with it."

The victory was Stewart's second of his young career and a first ever complete-game for a player traded to Chicago from Toronto in late July.
