PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley says the team has exchanged contract proposals with defensive tackle Marcell Dareus, and hopes a deal can be reached before the start of the season.

Whaley is confident a front-runner will emerge in the team's three-way quarterback competition. And the GM has no intention to rush starting cornerback Leodis McKelvin onto the field until he's fully recovered after aggravating an injury to his right ankle.

Those were among the issues Whaley touched upon during an interview with The Associated Press three days into training camp.

Whaley acknowledged there will be a ''challenge'' negotiating what's anticipated to be a high-priced contract to re-sign Dareus, a two-time Pro Bowl selection. Without providing a timetable, he's confident both sides will come to an agreement.
