West Virginia expects NCAA to clear Grier to start 2017

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen says he expects suspended former Florida quarterback Wil Grier to be eligible for the start of the 2017 season.

Grier was suspended for one year in the middle of last season for testing positive for performance enhancing drugs. The suspension would have sidelined him for about half this season, but he decided to transfer out of Florida. That move will require him to sit out the entire 2016 season. It was unclear if the suspension would carry over to '17.

Holgorsen said in statement Friday that Grier is enrolled at West Virginia, but he could not officially confirm his eligibility until the summer of 2017.

''However, I fully anticipate him being eligible for the opening game of the 2017 season,'' Holgorsen said.

Grier was suspended in October for a one year by the NCAA. He appealed, but the NCAA upheld the suspension. He played in six games last season as a redshirt freshman, starting five, and completed 66 percent of his passes for 1,204 yards, with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions.
