SEATTLE -- Washington coach Chris Petersen is keeping his starting quarterback a secret until taking the field for Friday night's season opener at No. 23 Boise State.

Petersen said Sunday the Huskies decided the best move for their program was withholding the name of their starting quarterback, in part to limit distractions heading into the opener. Junior Jeff Lindquist, redshirt freshman K.J. Carta-Samuels and true freshman Jake Browning competed for the job during fall camp.

Lindquist is the only one of the three with experience, starting last year's season opener against Hawaii. Browning has gained the most attention after setting national high school records at Folsom High just outside of Sacramento, California. Browning enrolled at Washington in January and because he got the experience of going through spring practice, Petersen says he doesn't view Browning as a true freshman.
